2018/19 Glynneath away

Glynneath 31 v 8 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to high flyers Glynneath searching for their first away win in National League Division One. Once again they had to include players with little first team experience. As usual the Celtic set piece was solid with the pack and backs defending well. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their efforts in broken play. The home team ran in five tries from some distance.

The first half was fiercely contested with the Celtic front five of Tom Evans, Morgan Reeves, Sean Lambert, Rhys Bevan Jones and Alex Jones defending well and taking every opportunity to carry the ball at their opponents. The back row of Mark Hillier-Rees, Jonathan Davies and Captain Oliver Petty were always in the thick of the action with Davies being voted Celtic Man of the Match.

The half backs Cameron Jones and Matthew Harris distributed well and made many excellent cover tackles. Centres Lee Arthur and Lewis Jenkins held the line well but could not find the way through the home rush defence. Celtic back three of Neil Arthur, Aaron Williams and Morgan Lloyd had little attacking possession but counter attacked whenever they could.

Glynneath went ahead after ten minutes when their outside half chipped over the defensive line on half way and after gathering the ball. He took play to the Celtic line where their pack secured good possession which allowed their outside him to touch down near the posts. He converted. Matthew Harris closed the gap with a penalty. Celtic lost concentration in the 12 minutes of injury time and let in two tries created in the Glynneath half.

Celtic continued to pressure the home defence in the second half and closed the gap when their forwards rampaged down field and took the ball to the home try line. Scrum half Ryan Phillips was given quick ball and he passed to wing Aaron Williams on the blind side for him to power over in the corner for a touchdown. Glynneath scored immediately from the kick off to secure a bonus point and then repeated the feat from the next kick off to make the game safe.
