Celtic Youth 11 v 6 Nanty Youth

Maesteg Celtic Youth played Nantyffyllon Youth at Garth Park in front of a large crowd last friday evening. It was an excellent competitive local derby in which two well matched sides competed to the end. Nanty had a large pack which they used to their advantage, but the Celtic defence was up to the task.

Intense pressure by the home team won a penalty which centre Callum Power kicked. Nanty could have got on the score board soon after when they created a three on one situation in the Celtic 22 but wing Rhys Cahill made a ferocious tackle to save the situation.

The second half was equally close with Nanty outside half Ellis Bird kicking 2 penalties. The Nanty driving maul caused Celtic great difficulty and they crossed the line twice but tenacious defence by the home team prevented them from touching down. Celtic centre Callum Power kicked a penalty to even the score.

Celtic began to dominate play late in the game. In injury time Power kicked a penalty into touch close to the Nanty try line and another excelent throw in by hooker Chris Pound allowed Celtic to put presure on the visitors defence. Nanty were forced to give away a penalty and scrum half Declan williams passed to prop Rhys Edwards who ran strongly at the defence. When he was stopped the ball was fed to prop James williams who drove hard over the line for the winning score. Wing Rhys Cahill was voted Celtic Man of the Match.
