Maesteg Celtic 22 v 16 Heol y Cyw

Maesteg Celtic entertained Heol y Cyw at Garth Park and were given a difficult time by the visitors. Heol y Cyw played with the wind at their backs in the first half and dominated play. Their big pack held their own in all aspects of the game while their outside half Rhys Thomas kept the Celtic pinned in their own half with some excellent kicking. Matters were not helped when two key players, prop Sean Lambert and flanker Tom Mines, were forced off with injuries.

The visitors took an early lead when a great attacking kick forced Celtic to concede a penalty under pressure. Quick thinking by their scrum half Eyers resulted in a try. Both teams swapped penalties before the visitors went further ahead with a try from a long distance counter attack.

A strong lecture by forwards coach Alex Jones at half time and a strong wind in the faces of the visitors for the rest of the game changed the shape of the play. Celtic front five of Mathew Phillips, Morgan Reeves, Simon Lent, Alex Jones and Man of the Match Rhys Bevan Jones upped their game and began to dominate their bigger opponents. While the back row of Kieran Power, Jonathan Davies and Captain Oliver Petty disrupted any attacks the visitors initiated.

Celtic closed the gap in scores when Celtic centre Lee Arthur took the ball at his opponent and scrum half Liam Healy used quick ball  to find second row Alex Jones arriving at speed. Jones ran 20 metres, drew the defence and then put wing Aaron Williams clear to score in the corner.

Celtic scored again when outside half Tom George kicked a penalty into the corner. Hooker Morgan Reeves found Alex Jones in the lineout and the pack drove the defence back over their try line for number eight Rhodri Bwye to touch down. Tom George converted from wide out.

Full back Kristian Jenkins set up the third try with a 50 metre kick to touch on the visitor’s line. Celtic forwards turned the ball over and relentlessly attacked the visitors try line. The stalemate was broken when scrum half Liam Healy threw a miss pass to hooker Morgan Reeves who crossed near the posts for the winning score. George converted. Morriston away next week !
