Maesteg Celtic played their last game of the WRU Plate competition at home to Pencoed. Celtic pack of front row Ben Uphill, Morgan Reeves and Sean Lambert together with locks Oliver Petty and Mark Wilkins dominated their opponents throughout the game. Their back row of Tom Mines, Ryan Turner and Rhodri Bwye worked hard in attack and defence.
Celtic half backs Liam Healy and Matthew Harris used the excellent possession given by the forwards to control most aspects of play. Centres Sam Mines and Kristian Jenkins were solid in defence and made a number of line breaks. The back three Aaron Williams, Connor Thomas and Morgan Lloyd defended well.
Pencoed opened the scoring with a long range penalty but Celtic responded immediately. A great drive by the forwards earned a penalty which was kicked to the corner by Matthew Harris. Several charges to the line were finished off by number 8 Rhodri Bwye. Harris converted. The home team persisted in conceding penalties which allowed the visitors to take the lead with two kicks. Another error near the visitor’s line gave away an interception which resulted in a converted try.
Celtic closed the gap with another forward drive from a line out which allowed number 8 Bwye to touch down and Harris to convert. Scrum half Liam Healy put Celtic ahead with a quickly taken penalty and a 30 metre sprint to the line. Harris converted. The two sides exchanged two penalties before Pencoed evened the score with a long range try. Celtic Captain Oliver Petty finished off a 20 metre series of pick and drives by the Celtic pack to put the game safe in the final minutes.
Forwards Oliver Petty, Sean Lambert and scrum half Liam Healy received votes for MoM but the honour was awarded to outside half Matthew Harris.
