Maesteg Celtic 21 v 12 Brynamman

Maesteg Celtic entertained Brynamman on a wet and windy afternoon. Both sides controlled the ball well and defended with aggression. Celtic front five of Sean Lambert, Ashley Poole, Damian Phillips, Alex Jones and Peter Kehoe held their own in the tight and gave no quarter in defence. The back row of Ryan Turner, Jonathan Davies and Captain Oliver Petty covered immense ground and took the ball at their opponents consistently. Half backs Lee Arthur and Matthew Harris distributed the ball well to centres Kristian Jenkins and Morgan Harris, who covered every move by their opposite numbers. The back three of Scot James, Ryan Lovatt and Geraint Roberts linked well and had some great runs.

Brynamman opened the scoring when they intercepted the ball while Celtic were attacking on their 22 and ran the length of the field for S Edwards to touch down. After half an hour Celtic began to exert control which allowed scrum half Lee Arthur to break through the visitors defences and make ground. When he was stopped he fed prop Damian Phillips who took the ball on before putting centre Kristian Jenkins clear for a try. Outside half Matthew Harris converted. Celtic went further ahead when Kristian Jenkins broke through and ran deep into Brynamman territory. Celtic won quick ball from the ensuing ruck and the ball came to second row Alex Jones who back flicked the ball to Man of the Match second row Peter Kehoe who ran down the touchline to score. Celtic then had a player red carded when he retaliated after being stamped on by an opponent. The half ended when Matthew Harris kicked a penalty.

The second half was played at high tempo with the Celtic 14 playing with great determination and resisting all attempts by the visitors to score. Mathew Harris put Celtic further ahead with a drop goal. Celtic substitutes, prop Mark Wilkins, centre Harrison Evans, scrum half Liam Healey and wing Lewis Jenkins made an impact and helped to keep the visitors out. Celtic attacked the visitor’s line during a period of intense pressure and Captain Oliver Petty crossed the line but the referee was unsighted and disallowed it. Harris kicked the ensuing penalty before Brynamman finally broke the Celtic defence to touch down with minutes left on the clock.
