Cwmavon Youth 27 v 17 Maesteg Celtic
The match kicked off with Celtic playing with a strong blustery wind behind them but early pressure by the Cwmavon forwards brought them an early try, which they converted. Celtic hit back immediately when Morgan Stone took advantage of weak defence for a well taken try which was converted by Callum Power.
Outside half George Richards used the wind to good effect and excellent driving play by hooker Chris Pound and number 8 Ben Blaiklock resulted in prop James Williams powering over for a fine try.
Cwmavon were keen to run the ball from deep and a break by their wing was stopped near the line by a superb cover tackle by full back Morgan Stone. A period of intense pressure followed in which Jackson Trelore, Shay Davies, Jack Hanbury and Luca Barcley were prominent in defence. A strong burst by the home number 8 saw them touch down under the posts to draw level.
Towards the end of the first half Celtic were getting on top but Cwmavon counter attacked and scored again to take the lead.
The home team opened the second half with a penalty. They used the conditions well but further excellent defensive work by Dylan James, Klaan Storey, Rhys Cahill and some strong driving runs by Rhys Edwards kept Celtic well in the game.
Cwmavon extended their lead with a very good long distance team try. Celtic fought back with a well deserved try by prop Jack Hanbury.
Cwmavon’s greater experience was the telling factor in this intense confrontation. Congratulations to both sides for an entertaining game in very difficult conditions.
