Tondu 13 v 0 Maesteg Celtic

A Maesteg Celtic side weakened by injury visited a Tondu side strengthened by squad members from Bridgend and Aberavon at Pandy Park. Tondu began the game at high tempo and spread the ball at every opportunity. They took the lead after 5 minutes when Celtic were penalised for offside in their 22. They went further ahead 10 minutes later when Celtic were penalised half way and a quick tap penalty caught them unawares. The Tondu wing used his pace to run around the defence and sprint to the line. Celtic lost a player to the sin bin on the half hour and Tondu disrupted a Celtic scrum in midfield and then charged down the clearance kick. The ball was gathered and good inter passing resulted in another try in the corner.

In the second half the Celtic front row of Sean Lambert, Morgan Reeves, and Mathew Phillips together with lineout jumpers Alex Jones, Mark Hillier-Rees and Captain Oliver Petty began to get on top. Their flankers Jonathan Davies and man of the match Garin Bowen were excellent in attack and defence. Celtic half backs Morgan Lloyd and Matthew Harris distributed the ball quickly to the back line of Scott Wilkins, Lee Arthur, Lewis Jenkins and Neil Arthur but the home rush defence was impenetrable. Most of the play was in the middle third of the field with neither team able to put pressure on their opponent’s line. Celtic Man of the Match was flanker Garin Bowen who was playing his first game of the season after a long layoff from injury.
