Maesteg Celtic 14 v 5 Morriston

Maesteg Celtic entertained a strong Morriston fifteen at Garth Welfare Park for hard fought encounter. The first half hour was dominated by the visitors whose efficient control of the ball allowed them to pound the Celtic defence constantly.  The Welsh defence coach Shaun Edwards would have been proud of the way each Celtic player did their part in preventing Morriston   converting this possession into points. Props Sean Lambert, Lloyd Griffiths, and back row Callum Bowen, Jonathan Davies and Captain Oliver Petty sealed the gaps around the rucks while the three quarter line of Sam Mines, Lee Arthur, Nathan Healy and Kristian Jenkins left no gaps and forced their opponents across field.

A Celtic back was yellow carded when he went for an interception and was deemed to have deliberately knocked on. Morriston failed to take advantage and also had a player yellow carded. Kristian Jenkins kicked deep into the opponents half and second row Alex Jones caught a quick line out and passed to hooker Ashley Poole who took the ball deep into the visitors 22. Morriston conceded a scrum from which another player was yellow carded. Celtic opted for a further scrum and after repeated pressure the referee was forced to award a penalty try. Morriston took the kick off and camped in the Celtic 22. On half time they drove over from a line out to close the score.

The second half was as intense as the first with both teams giving no quarter. Celtic dominated the lines out through Robert Golden, Alex Jones and Oliver Petty. Substitutes Peter Kehoe, Ryan Jones and the Phillips brothers Damien and Mathew added fresh legs and put Morriston on the back foot. Outside half Mathew Harris leaped high to intercept a long Morriston pass and ran in from 40 metres to score. He converted the try. Morriston reverted to a kicking game to beat the home defence but the Celtic back three Scott James, Ben Poole and Kristian Jenkins were solid under pressure.

Centre Nathan Healy was awarded Man of the Match.
