WRU Under 8 Winter Festival

Maesteg Celtic took a trip to Derwen Primary School in Bridgend to play on their brand new 4g pitch.

The day was supposed to be a winter festival of rugby put on by the WRU, but the day was spoiled by most of the invited teams not turning up. Cwmgors and Celtic were the only two that got out of bed early on a Sunday morning after a Wales victory the day before!

The two teams decided to play three ten minute periods of rugby, which seemed to be enough on the big open 4g playing area. With the sun shining on the youngsters backs, it was the right choice.

Scores weren’t kept as such, as it was a WRU event. They tend to thrown upon it at this level , so the plan for the day was to work on, our passing along the line, knowing when to pass and when too hold on to the ball , and also improvements in our line defence . The three areas worked out wonderfully well and the boys improved no end. We are looking forward to getting back on the training field on Wednesday to work on it once again.

Both teams played great attacking rugby on the day, but it was Celtic who enjoyed crossing the chalk most often. Celtic completed at least 10 sets of 6 tags during the game,

So all in all it was a great day for the mini Celts. Next weekend we are home against another local team Bridgend Athletic. The national side are playing the world champions the day before so I am sure there will be a few sore heads on Sunday morning, but the games will go ahead whatever.
