Maesteg Celtic bounced back with style after last week’s defeat with a six try victory over visitors Waunarlwydd. Conditions were not good with a strong wind blowing from the south but this did not deter the Celtic three quarters who were on fine form. Centres Lee Arthur and Kristian Jenkins found holes in the visitors defence and the back three of Lewis Jenkins, Ryan Lovatt and James Dixon showed great pace in attack. Celtics new scrum half Cameron Jones settled in well with his partner Matthew Harris who was on top form.
Waunarlwydd kicked off and prop Ryan Shearan gathered the ball. Scrum half Cameron Jones box kicked and the defenders let the ball bounce which allowed wing Ryan Lovatt to gather and put outside half Matthew Harris clear to touch down in the corner. Waunarlwydd closed the gap when Celtic were caught offside on their 22. Celtic scored again when the front five of Ryan Shearan, Ashley Poole, Sean Lambert, Mark Hillier-Rees and Peter Kehoe drove their opponents back at pace. Flanker Jonathan Davies broke clear and drew the defence before passing to Matthew Harris who put Cameron Jones over under the posts for a try on his debut.
Waunarlwydd showed great determination in attack and were awarded a penalty for a high tackle under the Celtic posts. Celtic responded when second row Peter Kehoe drove through the defence and the visitors were offside at the ruck. Harris kicked the penalty. Harris kicked another penalty after centre Kristian Jenkins made a break down the middle of the field and the visitors killed the ball at the ensuing ruck. The visitors then kicked a penalty of their own.
Wing Ryan Lovatt caught the ball from the restart and passed to prop Sean Lambert who took it on. Cameron Jones put Wing Lewis Jenkins clear to run downfield. He passed inside to Kristian Jenkins, who put Peter Kehoe over under the posts. Harris converted. He then kicked his third penalty. Celtics fourth try came when substitute Harri Evans put full back James Dixon clear and he made ground before kicking ahead. Kristian Jenkins followed up and regained possession before giving the ball to prop Sean Lambert to drive to the line. Quick ball allowed Harris to cross kick to wing Lewis Jenkins who gathered and crossed for a try.
Waunarlwydd scored when a defensive error on the Celtic line gave them an easy try. Celtic responded when full back James Dixon broke the defence and passed to Kristian Jenkins who took the ball on before putting Lee Arthur over for the touchdown. Celtics final try came as a result of Arthur giving quick ball to substitute Morgan Reeves who put Kristian Jenkins clear for a 40 metre run. He passed to Dixon who put substitute Shaun Raymond clear to score. The visitors showed great spirit and ended the game with 40 metre try of their own. The final score was Maesteg Celtic 49 Waunarlwydd 21. Wing Ryan Lovatt was voted Man of the Match.
