Ystradgynlais 24 v 26 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to Ystradgynlais for a Division 2 League fixture. The game was closely contested with both defences holding strong. Most of the play was in the middle third of the pitch with occasional forays into the 22’s.

Celtic started well and earned a penalty after five minutes. Outside half Scott Sainsbury was successful from 35 metres. Celtic went further ahead when second row Kieran Power won a lineout near halfway and Sainsbury threw a miss pass to wing Kristian Jenkins who made ground before passing to wing Lee Arthur who put full back Morgan Lloyd clear. Lloyd took the ball to the 22 before kicking ahead. Jenkins beat the cover defence to the ball for the touchdown.  Sainsbury kicked the conversion.

The home team closed the gap with a well worked try before Celtic scored again. Sainsbury kicked a penalty to touch in the 22 and second row Alex Jones won the four man lineout. Number eight Ryan Turner took the ball at the home defence and scrum half Liam Healy gave quick ball to Sainsbury who threw a long pass to Kristian Jenkins who touched down. Sainsbury converted.

The home team responded with a push over try before Sainsbury ended the half with a penalty kick from 45 metres.

Celtic began the second half with impressive forward drives by front rowers Sean Lambert, Morgan Reeves and Mark Wilkins together with great work by the back row of Peter Kehoe, Josh Mines and Ryan Turner.  The home team were forced to concede a penalty which was kicked by Sainsbury. Ystradgynlais kicked a penalty of their own before a speedy break by their scrum half on halfway allowed their outside half to score.

The home team were now one point ahead with 20 minutes to go. Celtic attacked furiously but handling errors and over enthusiastic penalties allowed the home team to keep them out. With minutes left on the clock Ystradgynlais three quarters conceded a penalty on their 22 and Celtic Man of the Match Scott Sainsbury calmly kicked the winning points.
