Maesteg Celtic 43 v 16 Seven Sisters
Maesteg Celtic entertained Seven Sisters in the League for the first time in their history. Playing only their second league fixture of the season on Garth Park they were determined to impress the home supporters. The front five of Sean Lambert, Morgan Reeves, Mark Wilkins, Alex Jones and newcomer Mathew Davies were dominant from the kick off.
Seven Sisters defended well and took play to the Celtic 22 where they earned a penalty to take the lead. Celtic drove hard at the restart and won a penalty which outside half Scott Sainsbury kicked to the 22 metre line. Hooker Morgan Reeves found Alex Jones who was driven to the visitor’s goal line. New signing Mathew Davies dived over for the touchdown.
Celtic went further ahead when flanker Jonathan Davies broke through the defence and passed to Alex Jones who put wing Geraint Roberts clear. The Celtic back rowers Tom Mines and Ryan Turner cleared out at the tackle and second row Mathew Davies powered over for his second touchdown. Outside half Scott Sainsbury converted.
Soon after Celtic centres Kristian Jenkins and Sam Mines put wing Aaron Williams clear. He kicked ahead and the supporting players earned a scum in the visitors 22 which they drove over the try line for number eight Ryan Turner to score. Just before half time the visitors scored a try followed by a penalty to close the score.
Celtic began the second half searching for the bonus point try, which came from a spectacular piece of French style forward play. Ryan turner made a break on half way and then passed inside to hooker Morgan Reeves who drew the defence before passing back to Turner he ran into the 22 before passing back to Reeves. When Reeves was stopped 19 year old Man of the Match Tom Mines was at hand to touchdown. New signing 19 year old outside half Tom George kicked the conversion.
The visitors refused to give in and after repeated attacks on the Celtic line they earned a try. Celtic continued to press and a long clearance kick by the visitors was gathered by wing Geraint Roberts on half way. He ran the ball back and linked with Morgan Lloyd and Sam Mines who put wing Liam Healy clear. He drew the defence and passed inside to Jenkins who put Healy over in the corner. George converted.
Celtic ended the game with a similar try when Kristian Jenkins caught a clearance kick and ran it back at the visitors. Great inter passing by many players resulted in scrum half Leon Evans scoring near the posts. George converted. All in all it was a very impressive performance by the home side. Next week league leaders Aberavon Quins !
