12 Pencoed home

Maesteg Celtic 35 v 17 Pencoed

Maesteg Celtic continued their run of home wins with a 35-17 defeat of Pencoed. It was an unusually loose game with both teams spreading the ball at every opportunity. Celtic nailed their colours to the mast in the first minute when Captain Oliver Petty picked up from the back of a scrum on half way and ran down the blind side. He drew the wing and passed to Man of the Match Sam Mines who sprinted down the touch line dummied a pass to wing Aaron Williams before stepping inside the fullback to score.

Five minutes later normal service was resumed. Outside half Tom George kicked a penalty in to touch in the visitors 22 and hooker Morgan Reeves found jumper Kieran Power. The pack drove him towards the line before Sam’s brother Tom detached and sprinted over for the touchdown. George kicked two penalties and Pencoed responded with one before Celtic scored their third try.

Flanker Tom Mines broke through the Pencoed defence on half way and linked with prop Sean Lambert who took the ball on. Lambert passed back to Mines who fed prop Simon Lent who was brought down just short of the line. Number eight Oliver Petty gathered the ball and drove over for the try. George converted.

The second half was as open as the first. Pencoed closed the gap in scores when Celtic spilled the ball in the visitors 22 and they returned it 70 metres to score under the posts. Celtic’s bonus point try was another team effort. Number eight Petty ran from a scrum on half way and linked with Sam Mines who ran clear. He linked with full back Morgan Lloyd, who passed to centre Kristian Jenkins. When he was stopped he found top try scorer, flanker Jonathan Davies, arriving at pace to touch down. George converted.

Pencoed never gave up and took advantage of another Celtic error to run in their second try. Celtic three quarters continued to attack. Wing Scot James finished a 60 metre move with a touchdown in the corner but the referee was unsighted and disallowed the try. Another great effort saw full back Morgan Lloyd brought down just short of the line. The referee awarded a yellow card for a defender killing the ball and Celtic opted for a scrum. A powerful drive allowed number eight Oliver Petty to touch down. Roll on Heol y Cyw !
