Cwmgors 30 v 27 Maesteg Celtic

Unbeaten Maesteg Celtic travelled to bottom of the league Cwmgors last Saturday. It was evident from the start that they were suffering from their magnificent effort in the WRU plate competition last week. Their usually solid defence was porous to the constant charges by the big home forwards and their three quarters found it difficult to penetrate the Cwmgors defence from set pieces. Celtic  front row of Captain Sean Lambert, Mathew Phillips and Damien Phillips held their own in the scum but were unable to dominate, while jumpers Mark Hillier-Rees and Rhys Bevan Jones won good possession under pressure.

Celtic opened the scoring with a penalty by outside half Mathew Harris. Cwmgors responded immediately with a speculative high kick to the corner and indecision in the Celtic defence allowed the ball to bounce and the Cwmgors right wing picked it up at pace to touch down.   Celtic took the lead with a great try from half way. Centre Nathan Healy put flanker Jonathan Davies clear to make ground. He passed to wing Sam Mines, who drew the defence before passing inside to Davies who ran in field and linked with flanker Callum Bowen. The ball was given to Nathan Healy who passed to Sam Mines who scored in the corner. Harris converted. Celtic conceded a penalty on half way which was kicked to the corner. After repeated attacks down the middle they threw the ball wide for their outside half to burst through to score. The try was converted. Cwmgors ran the ball from the restart but Mathew Harris anticipated the move and intercepted on half way to run past the cover defence to score in the corner. He converted his try from wide out. Cwmgors took the ball into the Celtic 22 and after repeated drives they were awarded a penalty to close the scores.

Cwmgors took the lead early in the second half when their speedy winger was worked clear and ran in near the posts. The try was converted. Soon after this, a Celtic player was yellow carded. The Celtic 14 men raised their game and their efforts earned them a penalty which Harris kicked. With 5 minutes to go, Harris kicked a penalty to the corner which was won by Mark Hillier-Rees. From the ensuing play, full back Morgan Lloyd was worked clear to touch down in the corner. Harris converted from the touch line to put Celtic in the lead. Cwmgors counter attacked from the kick off and put Celtic under pressure. Celtic tried to run the ball out of trouble but turned the ball over and conceded a try for Cwmgors to win the match. Flanker Jonathan Davies was awarded Celtic Man of the Match
