Penlan 7 v 38 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic visited bottom club Penlan in their chase for the league title and came away with a six try win. Celtic dominated the game with their pack controlling all aspects of play. Their front row of Sean Lambert, Ashley Poole and Lloyd Jenkins formed a solid wall defence at the rucks and imposed themselves on their opponents in the scrums. Second rows Mark Hillier-Rees and Alex Jones won the lineout battle and carried the ball to Penlan in attack. As usual the back row of Peter Kehoe, Callum Bowen and Captain Oliver Petty were everywhere the action was. Half backs Leon Evans and Matthew Harris distributed the ball well. The contrasting styles of centres Lee Arthur and Kristian Jenkins put the home defence in disarray. The back three, Sam Mines, Lloyd Jenkins and Ben Poole worked together to counter attack with great effect.

Celtic opened the scoring when outside half Matthew Harris chipped over the defensive line and full back Lloyd Jenkins gathered the ball and ran 40 metres to touch down. Harris converted. Celtics second try came after centre Kristian Jenkins kicked a penalty deep into the home 22 and the lineout was driven forward. Scrum Half Leon Evans moved the ball to Matthew Harris who passed to Kristian Jenkins and looped around to receive the return pass. He then put centre Lee Arthur through a gap to power over for a try. Harris converted.

Celtic played downhill second half and took full advantage. Captain Oliver Petty made a break and fed Kristian Jenkins who drew the cover and gave the ball to Man of the Match Peter Kehoe to run in the third try. Penlan restarted and regained the ball only for it to bounce into the hands of Celtics unsung hero hooker Ashley Poole. He sprinted through the opposition and ran 70 metres to touch down under the posts. Try number five was scored by centre Kristian Jenkins who was given turnover ball in his 22 and sprinted the length of the field to touch down. Celtics final try came when outside half Lloyd Jenkins kicked over the defence and speedy wing Sam Mines followed up and gathered the ball. He made ground and passed to Lloyd Jenkins for his second touchdown. Penlan didn’t give up and were rewarded with a try to end the game. Celtic now need one point from their last game against Cwmavon to win the league.
