Maesteg Celtic 2nds 9 v 13 Kenfig Hill 2nds

Maesteg Celtic 2nd XV played Kenfig Hill 2nd XV in an Ospreys League match at Garth Park. It was a competitive match with both teams playing with determination. The visitors played with the wind first half and used the conditions well. They opened the scoring with a three quarter try in the corner after fifteen minutes. Celtic closed the gap when outside half Kristian Jenkins kicked a penalty after a period of Celtic pressure. The visitors went further ahead towards half time with two penalties when Celtic infringed at the ruck.

The second half was all Celtic with the front five of Jay Whelan, Ashley Pole, Captain Keith Stone, Ed Randall and Rhys Bevan Jones well on top. Celtic back row of Mark Hillier-Rees, Nathan Adams and, Man of the Match, Peter Kehoe were dominant in the loose. Half backs Ryan Phillips and Rhodri Thomas coped well with the pressure exerted by the visitors. Centres Shaun Raymond and Lewis David defended well but could not exploit the Mules defence. Celtic Back three of Alun Blackwell, Scott Wilkins and Gavin Joseph were strong under their opponents kicks but had little attacking ball.

Substitute outside half Rhodri Thomas kicked two penalties to close the gap to 9-13. Late in the game Celtic were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and their captain asked the referee the score. He replied 9-16, so Celtic kicked to touch in the corner. Kenfig Hill won the lineout and cleared their line. Soon after Celtic were awarded another penalty on the visitors 22 and the referee confirmed the score to be 9-16 so Celtic opted for a scrum. The Kenfig Hill defence held firm once more and they ran out winners 9-13.
