Brynamman 27 v 24 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to Brynamman looking for their first away win in West Central League Division one. Unfortunately they had to make 8 changes (2 positional) to the team that won last week. The first half saw the pack of Keith Stone, Ashley Poole, Sean Lambert, Rhys Bevan-Jones, Alex Jones, Mark Hillier-Rees, Ed Randall and Captain Oliver Petty playing well and dominating both scrums and lineouts.  Celtic’s three quarters had difficulty in coping with the well organised home three quarters and let in 3 tries all created from their own half. Just before half time Brynamman lost a prop and were forced to go to passive scrums while going down to 14 players.

Celtic began the second half 24-9 down. With their superiority in the scrums removed they took play into the home 22 and earned a passive scrum near the line. Scrum half Cameron Jones moved the ball wide and outside half Harrison Evans drew the defence before passing to centre Lee Arthur who put Matthew Harris through a gap to score. Evans converted. He then closed the gap with a fine penalty before Brynamman went further ahead with one of their own. Celtic attacked relentlessly and were rewarded when Harrison Evans kicked them deep into the home 22. The forwards took the ball on repeatedly until Oliver Petty broke the defence and the ball came to Matthew Harris who dived over in the corner. Celtic continued to press but had to be content with a losing bonus point. Outside half Harrison Evans was voted Celtic Man of the Match.
