Maesteg RFC XV 21 v 26 Maesteg Celtic XV

A healthy crowd turned up at the old parish to support the Kevin Dixon Memorial game. The game was played in fantastic spirit and a fine crowd turned up to support a great event. The welcome and atmosphere in the clubhouse before and after was equally fantastic. Maesteg RFC opened their new players lounge, aptly named the Kevin Dixon lounge.

A Maesteg Select XV made up of ex players such as Callum Powell (Maesteg Quins), Lawrence Howley (Llantwit Major), Gavin Ronan (Tata Steel) combined with the current Maesteg RFC players to take on a Maesteg Celtic XV made up of 1sts and 2nds. There were also some players who came out of retirement to play in such a fantastic occasion.

It was Maesteg who started the brighter of the teams on a dry running rugby track. Maesteg capitalised on Celtic’s slow start and raced into a 21-0 lead with only 15 minutes on the clock. The pace and footwork of Callum Powell, and kicking of Howley paid dividends for the Maesteg RFC team.

Celtic slowly started to gain the upper hand as the half progressed with the Celtic pack beginning to get on top and the errors became less frequent. This led to a series of attacks which ended up with Antony Gibbons crashing over from 10m out. Cameron Jones the Celtic livewire scrum half also crossed for a try.

The second half was more of the same with both teams keen to play open attacking rugby in memory of a great man. This resulted in Lloyd Jenkins making several fine line breaks which could have resulted in tries. Cameron Jones again scored using his pace to cross the whitewash. Maesteg RFC attacked hard looking to grab the ascendancy back with number 8 Phil Wheeler at the heart of many attacks but some fine defence from the forwards and backs of Celtic stopped Maesteg getting on the score board. Perhaps it was fitting that Centre and captain for the night Lee Arthur, the nephew of the late Kevin Dixon, should score the winning try.
