Gorseinon 2nds 13 v 43 Maesteg Celtic 2nds

Maesteg Celtic 2nds travelled to Gorseinon for their first Ospreys League fixture. Although it had rained all morning the weather cleared up for the match and conditions were very good to start the game. Celtic played uphill into a steady breeze in the first half. Gorseinon forwards drove strongly at the Celtic defence from the start but the visitor’s front five of Damien Phillips, Morgan Reeves, Jay Whelan, Mark Wilkins and Ross Powell held firm. Gorseinon outside half attempted to kick for territory but the Celtic back three of Geraint Roberts, Gareth Blackwell and Shaun Raymond ran the ball back with interest. Centres Lee Arthur and Lloyd Jenkins defended well and attacked at every opportunity.

Celtic opened the scoring after ten minutes when young scrum half Lloyd Turner  received the ball from a lineout and passed to outside half Neil Arthur who made an outside break through the defensive line before putting his brother Lee clear to touch down. Shaun Raymond converted. Gorseinon closed the gap with a well taken penalty from 40 metres, before Celtic went further ahead. After repeated drives into the home 22 young scrum half Turner found centre Lee Arthur at pace on the short side and he took the ball to the line. Flanker Callum Bowen followed up and crossed for the try.

Gorseinon scored early in the second half from a well executed lineout move. Later Celtic were awarded a penalty in the home 22 and chose a scrum. Number 8 Mark Hillier-Rees picked up and drove at the defence. Second row Mark Wilkins followed up and drove over for the touchdown.  Geraint Roberts converted. From the restart Celtic ran the ball across in front of their posts and were penalised at the breakdown. Gorseinon kicked the penalty.

Celtic gained a bonus point when substitute scrum half Liam Healy made a 40metre break and Neil Arthur kicked the ensuing penalty into touch in the home 22. Line out jumper Mark Hillier-Rees won quick ball which allowed outside half Neil Arthur to cut through the defence. Effective clearing out by Captain Nathan Adams allowed second row Ross Powell to crash over for the try. Roberts converted.

Celtic coach Kieran Power made a number of changes, bringing on experienced flanker Ian Herbert, veteran prop Dale Cook, centre Lee Sainsbury and wing Gavin Joseph.

Celtics fifth try came when flanker Callum Bowen burst through a lineout and charged 30 metres before being dragged down. From the ensuing scrum outside half Neil Arthur fed wing Geraint Roberts on the burst and he ran through the defence untouched. Nathan Edwards converted.

Their sixth try came from a break by full back Roberts in his own half. He passed to wing Gavin Joseph who ran 40 metres down the touch line before drawing the cover defence and passing back inside to Roberts who touched down.

The match concluded when Roberts intercepted on half way and sprinted around the defence and ran to the line. He returned the compliment to Gavin Joseph by passing to him to score. Hooker Morgan Reeves was nominated Man of the Match.
