Maesteg Celtic 2nds 27 v 5 Nantyffyllon 2nds

Maesteg Celtic 2nds played local rivals Nantyffyllon at Garth Park for their last game of the season. Captain Keith Stone had decided once more to retire from playing rugby and was clapped into the field.

The game was played in good spirit with both teams playing attractive rugby on a lovely evening. Nanty fielded a big pack and commanded the scrums and mauls in the first half but were unable to break the Celtic defence of Captain Keith Stone, veteran Ian Herbert, Anthony Gibbons and Alun Evans. The home team opened the scoring when centre Rhodri Thomas kicked a penalty to the corner and number eight Nathan Adams won the lineout. The pack combined well to drive the visitors over their try line for flanker Jonathan Davies to score.

Celtics second try was similar when prop Jay Whelan broke clear and took the ball into the Nanty 22 and forced them to concede a lineout. Once again the forwards combined to give prop Tom Evans the touchdown. Nanty responded when a Celtic error gave them possession in the home 22 and they used the ball well to score.

Celtic backs were not to be left out. Young outside half Cody John moved quick ball via centres Lewis David and Rhodri Thomas so wing Neil Arthur could run clear. He drew the defence and passed inside to full back Ben Poole who was stopped illegally. Poole took the resulting penalty quickly and ran in under the posts. Rhodri Thomas converted. Hooker Morgan Reeves who was having a great game was rewarded with the fourth try.

The second half was evenly contested with neither side dominating. Coach Kieran Power rotated the subs so that Shaun Raymond, Gareth Blackwell, Grant Healey and Tyler Buckley had a run out.

Man of the Match scrum half Liam Healy, who was ever alert, pounced on a loose ball from a visitors scrum in their 22 to sprint through for the final try.
