Maesteg Celtic 17 v 23 Heol y Cyw

Maesteg Celtic’s run of bonus point defeats continued when they played Heol y Cyw at home on Saturday. Celtic pack played well and dominated the scrumages for long periods but frequent errors prevented them from establishing any prolonged periods of play in the visitors 22.

Heol y Cyw opened the scoring with a penalty which was soon cancelled out by one by Celtic outside half Matthew Harris. Celtic errors allowed the visitors to kick 2 more penalties and a converted try before half time.

Celtic had a purple patch early in the second half and scored 2 converted tries. The first resulted from a penalty kick to the corner by Matthew Harris which allowed Celtic to drive hard for the try line. Quick ball from scrum half Morgan Lloyd gave Harris time to throw a long pass to hooker Morgan Reeves free on the touch line and he scored unopposed. Five minutes later Harris kicked to the corner once more and hooker Reeves found Captain Oliver Petty in the line out and he was driven over the try line for prop Ben Uphill to touch down. Harris kicked both conversions to put Celtic one point ahead.

Heol y Cyw attacked mercilessly in the final quarter but great defence by Celtic centres, Kristian Jenkins, Gethin Tremlett and back three Neil Arthur, Aaron Williams and Tom George kept them out until near the final whistle. Celtic defence was finally breached with less than 10 minutes on the clock when the visitors scored a converted try.

Outside half Matthew Harris was voted Man of the Match (MoM)
