Maesteg Celtic 17 v 13 Pwllheli

Maesteg Celtic entertained Division 1 North high flyers Pwllheli in the WRU plate at Garth Welfare Park. The game was played at high intensity throughout with both teams driving at each other fiercely. No quarter was asked or given.

Pwllheli began at a high pace and forced the Celtic defence to concede two penalties which were converted by their centre. Celtic upped their game and soon matched their opponents in every aspect. Great play by the front five of Damian Phillips, Ashley Poole, Sean Lambert, Oliver Petty, Alex Jones and Mark Hillier-Rees forced Pwllheli to concede a penalty on their 22 which outside half Mathew Harris kicked. Just on half time Celtic took the lead when flanker Calum Bowen broke the defensive line and made ground before passing to scrum half Morgan Lloyd who fed second row Alex Jones. Alex found number eight Jonathan Davies unmarked outside him and put him clear to run 20 yards to touch down in the corner. Mathew Harris converted.

Pwllheli responded in the second half and took the ball into the Celtic 22. They repeatedly attacked the Celtic line but strong defence by the Celtic forwards and backs held them out for some time. Eventually their scrum half found a gap and crossed near the posts. The try was converted to put them in the lead.

Pwllheli began kicking for territory but the Celtic back three of Sam Mines, Mathew Harris, and Scott James returned the ball with ease. Celtic centres Lee Arthur and Kristian Jenkins left no gaps and forced their opponents back. With time running out Harris kicked a penalty into the corner and the Celtic pack pounded their opponents line. After repeated infringement the referee was forced to award a penalty try.

Veteran prop Damian Phillips was awarded Man of the Match.
