Ystradgynlais 5 v 20 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic visited Ystradgynlais for a crucial top of the table clash. The wind favoured Ystradgynlais and they returned the Celtic kick off into the 22. They pressured the Celtic defence and were rewarded when a cross kick found their wing who scored, A Celtic player was yellow carded from the restart for a high tackle but this did not deter them. Their props Sean Lambert, 14 tackles and Lloyd Griffiths 10 tackles were impenetrable in defence and drove large holes in the Ystradgynlais defence throughout the game. Jumpers Alex Jones, Robert Golden and Mark Hillier-Rees were at their best creating a platform for the pack to dominate. Flanker Peter Kehoe tackled constantly while number 8 Jonathan Davies seemed to be everywhere.

Scrum half Morgan Lloyd gave excellent distribution to outside half Mathew Harris who used the ball to great advantage. Centres Nathan Healey and Lee Arthur were solid in defence and ran at their opponents with determination. The back three of Ben Poole, Scott James and Sam Mines were faultless and returned all kicks with interest.

Celtic evened the score when Mathew Harris kicked a penalty into the opponents 22. Alex Jones caught the lineout ball and was driven to the line. Ystradgynlais prevented the touch down but were driven over from the following scrum, where number 8 Jonathan Davies touched down. Soon after the restart Celtic had another player yellow carded.

Celtic continued to dominate the forward play in the second half and they went ahead when Harris saw substitute left wing James Jones unmarked and cross kicked for him to gather and score. They went further ahead when Harris chipped over the defensive line and wing Sam Mines chased up and gathered the bouncing ball to take play up to the home team’s line. The defenders came up early to prevent the try and Harris kicked the penalty. Ystradgynlais did not give up and tried hard to get a bonus point but the game was made safe when Harris put Centre Nathan Healy through a gap on half way. He made ground before passing to Lee Arthur who drew the defence before giving the ball back to Healey. He drew the cover players before passing to the ever present Jonathan Davies who crossed for his second try. Harris converted. This win puts Celtic 4 points clear at the top of the Table with a game in hand.

The Man of the Match was awarded to prop Sean Lambert who had an amazing game.
