Maesteg Celtic 29 v 24 Builth Wells

Maesteg Celtic entertained third placed Builth Wells at Garth Welfare Park on a sunny warm day. Builth kicked off and immediately put Celtic defence to the test, but determined tackling prevented an early score. The game proceeded at pace with Celtic pack winning good ball. Both teams used the good conditions to play open rugby.

Celtic opened the scoring when lineout man Alex Jones won the ball on the Builth 22 and the three quarters ran the ball wide. The visitors defence was deemed offside in midfield and outside half Mathew Harris kicked the penalty. Celtic went further ahead when Harris made a break on halfway and put wing Sam Mines clear to run in a try. Harris converted.  The home team increased their lead when centre Kristian Jenkins broke the Builth defensive line on halfway and passed to full back James Dixon who gave the ball to Mathew Harris. He drew the cover and moved the ball on to captain Oliver Petty who put centre Lee Arthur over to touch down. Celtic ended the half with a third impressive try. Once again Kristian Jenkins cut through the defence and passed to Sam Mines, he switched play inside and found wing Lloyd Jenkins who found the forwards lined up as backs. Lloyd passed to second row Alex Jones who put his partner Mark Hillier-Rees over to score.

The pace of the game and the heat took its toll on the big Celtic pack and the smaller mobile Builth eight began to dominate play in the second half. The intense pressure resulted in two tries early in the half. Celtic stuck to their task and Mathew Harris took a quick tap penalty on the ten-metre line and gave the ball to James Dixon who moved it on to Kristian Jenkins who scored the bonus point try under posts. Harris converted. The Builth pack took control of the last 15 minutes and were rewarded with two more tries to give them two bonus points which were not enough to prevent Celtic gaining promotion to the 1st Division next season.
