Maesteg Celtic 18 v 16 Llanelli Wanderers

Maesteg Celtic entertained Division 1 West side Llanelli Wanderers for a WRU Plate second round match. The Wanderers came to play with a conservative style and kept Celtic in their own half with excellent positional kicking from their outside half. Celtic tried kicking out of trouble but the wanderers ran the ball straight back at them. Great defence from the Celtic three quarters Scott James, Lee Arthur, James Jones, Lloyd Jenkins and Kristian Jenkins kept them out. Celtic front row of Sean Lambert, Mathew Phillips and Lloyd Griffiths held their scrum comfortably. Jumpers Mark Hillier-Rees, Robert Golden and Oliver Petty did well in the line outs.

Wanderers went ahead from a penalty and then their winger picked up a loose ball inside his own 22 and ran the length of the field to score. The half ended when Wanderers were yellow carded and Celtic outside half Mathew Harris kicked the penalty.

The second half continued in much the same vein with the Wanderers controlling territory. They went further ahead with another penalty which was cancelled out by one from Harris. A poor relieving kick and follow up by Celtic was gathered near half way and a slick move by the Wanderers backs resulted in a try in the corner.

With time running out, Celtic forwards attacked the kick off with renewed vigour and repeated attacks forced Wanderers to concede a penalty try and yellow card two minutes into injury time.  Wanderers kicked deep into the Celtic 22 from the restart. Celtic knew that they could not let the ball go dead so they began a series of pick and drives ably led by back rowers Ryan Jones, Jonathan Davies and Callum Bowen.  After numerous rucks involving forwards and backs, Celtic drove across field to the Wanderers line where scrum half Leon Evans dived over to score the winning try. Flanker Callum Bowen was awarded Man of the Match.
