Cwmavon 21 v 24 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic visited Cwmavon and gained a bonus point win in a division two league fixture. The game was very scrappy, with both sides unable to gain any fluency due to repeated errors. Celtic pack once again played with energy and enthusiasm. The front five of Sean Lambert, Ashley Poole, Daniel Miller, Alex Jones and Robert Golden dominated both scrum and lineout, while the back row of Mark Hillier-Rees, Garin Bowen and Captain Oliver Petty made good yardage. The three quarters, with newcomers Scott Wilkins and Kyle Buckley, ran the ball at every opportunity.

Cwmavon opened the scoring with a penalty in front of the posts when a Celtic forward was caught off side. Celtic responded quickly when flanker Garin Bowen caught a short line out and drove for the line. Cwmavon killed the ball and outside half Mathew Harris kicked for the corner. Hooker Ashley Poole found second row Alex Jones and the Celtic pack drove over the line for Ashley Poole to touch down.

Celtics second try came when outside half Mathew Harris made a break and linked with Alex Jones who passed to Oliver Petty. Wing Rhys Fisher came up at pace and ran the ball in for a try in the corner. Celtic nearly scored again when second row Robert Golden made a fine break but was brought down inches short of the line.

Celtics third try came early in the second half, when after fine interplay by three quarters Lee Arthur and Kristian Jenkins, the ball was moved in field for Robert Golden who charged over under the posts for his just reward. Mathew Harris converted. Celtics final try came when prop Sean Lambert charged down a clearance kick and Ashley Poole was driven over the line by the pack.

Cwmavon continued to compete bravely and put continued pressure in the Celtic 22 which resulted in a Celtic forward being yellow carded for not rolling away in a tackle. Further pressure gave them another penalty and another Celtic forward was yellow carded for not retiring 10 metres. Cwmavon then scored a converted try. In injury time Cwmavon took a quick throw in on the 10 metre line and ran in a try in the opposite corner to end the game.
