Maesteg Celtic 29 v 15 Penlan

Maesteg Celtic entertained Penlan at Garth Park on miserable rainy afternoon. Penlan were unable to field a qualified front row so the game began with passive scrums. The powerful Celtic front five of Sean Lambert, Ashley Poole, Damien Phillips, Mathew Jones and Alex Jones found it difficult to adapt and Penlan dominated possession in the first half hour. Celtic three quarters of Aaron Williams, Neil Arthur, Nathan Healy and Ben Poole defended so bravely that Penlan were forced to resort to an excellent drop goal by their outside half in order to get on the score board. Celtic outside half Luke Richards made several attempts to take play into Penlan territory but handling errors in the rain continually allowed Penlan to pin them back. Celtic took the lead when their forwards drove a maul to their opponents 22 before scrum half Lee Arthur saw fullback Kristian Jenkins arriving at pace. Jenkins glided through the defence and scored near the posts. Luke Richards converted. Celtic then had a forward yellow carded but the pack continued to put pressure on their opponents. This resulted in a penalty by Luke Richards, which was followed by a penalty try, and a yellow card against Penlan

The second half began with more Celtic pressure and a disallowed push over try. Penlan kicked well out of defence but substitute centre Mathew Harris caught the ball inside his own half and ran around the Penlan defence to score in the corner. Luke Richards converted. Penlan took the ball into the Celtic 22 and made several attempts to cross the Celtic line. The referee awarded two yellow cards to the Celtic followed by a penalty try. Thirteen man Celtic took play into the Penlan 22 and once again had a push over try disallowed. A series of penalties allowed Penlan back to the Celtic try line and their scrum half put the winger over in the corner. With time running out, Celtic continued to go for the bonus try. A penalty kick to the corner resulted in a fine lineout catch by second row Alex Jones and the forwards powered their way over the line for Captain Oliver Petty to touch down.

Prop Sean Lambert who carried the ball well many times and was impenetrable to the constant Penlan forward charges was awarded Man of the Match.
