Maesteg Celtic travelled to play league contenders and WRU Bowl finalists Bonymaen. They won the toss and chose to play down hill with the wind first half. Celtic began well and ran hard at the home defence. The pack quickly earned a penalty which outside half Matthew Harris kicked. Celtic returned the kickoff and a great run by prop Jay Whelan earned another penalty for Harris to kick.
Bonymaen responded well and ran at the Celtic defence with power and determination. Their three quarters took advantage of poor tackling to run in two tries wide out. Their forwards created a third try from a driving lineout. Celtic did not give up and great attacking runs by flanker Garin Bowen and prop Mark Wilkins took the ball deep into the home 22. Matthew Harris threw a flat miss pass to centre Sam Mines who sprinted through the defence to touch down under the posts. Harris converted. Bonymaen gained their bonus point try just before half time when they worked their wing clear to sprint in.
Celtic found the conditions difficult in the second half with the loss to injury of flanker Garin Bowen, full back Kristian Jenkins, Centre Sam Mines and prop Damien Phillips. Bonymaen disrupted the Celtic lineout and drove the scrums back. Number 8 Peter Kehoe was outstanding in coping with the retreating scrum. The home team ran in 3 more tries before Celtic took the ball into the home 22 and after a few attempts substitute prop Nathan Jenkins powered over in the corner for Celtics second try. Peter Kehoe was voted Celtic Man of the Match.
