Pencoed 25 v 36 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to Pencoed for a much welcomed league fixture. The pitch was in great condition but there was a strong wind blowing from the west. Pencoed played with the wind to start and used the conditions well. Celtic’s defensive line held strong and the front five of Sean Lambert, Mathew Phillips, Lloyd Griffiths, Mark Hillier-Rees and Alex Jones took the ball at Pencoed constantly. Celtic flankers Callum Bowen and Jonathan Davies harried the Pencoed half backs mercilessly. Celtics regular outside half Mathew Harris was injured in the warm up and was replaced by centre Kristian Jenkins who dealt with the wind well. Centre Lee Arthur lead the three quarter defence and tackled powerfully, aided by James Jones. The back three of Ben Poole, Lloyd Jenkins and Shaun Raymond returned the Pencoed tactical kicks effortlessly.

Celtic opened the scoring with a penalty by Kristian Jenkins and then went further ahead when Captain Oliver Petty drove on from a scrum and passed to prop Lloyd Griffiths who was stopped short of the line. Man of the Match scrum Half Leon Evans picked up the loose ball and dived over. Pencoed responded, when Celtic were down to fourteen men. A quick penalty saw them score under the post. Each side swapped penalties to make the half time score 11-10 to the visitors.

The second half saw Celtic camped in the Pencoed half. They went further ahead when Oliver Petty linked up with Leon Evans from a scrum near the line and he put flanker Jonathan Davies clear to score. Pencoed closed the gap with a penalty when a Celtic player infringed in front of his posts. Replacement outside half Luke Richards kicked two penalties for Celtic before a great break by centre Kristian Jenkins took play into the home 22. The ball was moved to the three quarters and an amazing long pass from flanker Jonathan Davies found full back Lloyd Jenkins arriving at pace to touch down in the corner. Celtics bonus point try came from forward pressure which left the defence weak in the centre and Lee Arthur ran through the gap to score.

With 6 minutes to go and the score 13-36, Pencoed threw caution to the wind and attacked relentlessly. They scored a great try on full time and kept possession from the restart with powerful attacks and recycling which won them a bonus point try fifteen minutes into injury time.
