Nantymoel 17 v 34 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to Nantymoel where they haven’t won for several years. Nantymoel played down the slope first half and took full advantage. They pounded the Celtic defence but great tackling by second row Mark Hillier Rees, flankers Peter Kehoe, Jonathan Davies, prop Mathew Phillips and man of the match Sean Lambert stopped them in their tracks. Against the run of play Celtic outside half Mathew Harris kicked to the corner and Captain Oliver Petty won the Nantymoel lineout. Celtic ran the ball and from the ensuing ruck debutant scrum half Leon Evans saw a gap on the blind side and sprinted through. He then passed to second row Alex Jones, who handed off several defenders, to score in the corner.

Celtic went further ahead from a penalty by Mathew Harris, but Nantymoel closed the gap with one of their own. Celtic took play to the home 22 and gave away a scrum. Hooker Ashley Poole won the strike against the head and number 8 Oliver Petty ran at the three quarters. Wing Kristian Jenkins arrived at pace and took a flat pass to run in under the posts. Harris converted. Nantymoel continued to pressure the Celtic defence and won a scrum in the Celtic 22 from which they created a gap for their full back to run in under the posts.

Nantymoel took the lead early in the second half with a brilliant counter attack from deep in their own half. Celtic regained the lead when flanker Rhys Bevan Jones burst through the defence and passed to centre Nathan Healey who gave it to number 8 Ryan Jones before receiving the return pass to score. They went further ahead when they won a scrum near the posts and the pack powered over for Ryan Jones to touch down. Harris converted.  The match concluded when Celtic full back James Jones kicked deep down field and speedy wing Aaron Williams created disarray in the home defence and a scrum under the posts was driven over for scrum half Leon Evans to score.
