Morriston 10 v 20 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic opened their league programme with a 10-20 win at Morriston. It was a closely contested affair with the Celtic forwards in command and the Morriston defence strong under pressure. The Celtic front row of Lloyd Griffiths, Ashley Poole and Sean Lambert dominated the scrums and worked hard in the loose. Second rows Robert Golden and Alex Jones were mobile and carried well. Captain Oliver Petty lead by example and was dominant in the lineout and had many great carries. Flankers Jonathan Davies and Peter Kehoe tackled fiercely on the gain line and cancelled out their opponents’ attempts to gain ground. Centre Lee Arthur had a great game at scrum half.   He was brave under pressure and distributed well.

Outside half Luke Richards came out of retirement and was targeted by the opposition forwards, he kept his composure to control the game well. Celtic centres Nathan Healey and Mathew Harris tackled well in defence and ran well in attack. Wingers Aaron Williams and new recruit Sam Mines showed their pace in attack and were solid in defence. Man of the Match full back Kristian Jenkins made several try stopping tackles and made many illusive runs through the Morriston defence.

Celtics first try came from a break near the half way by Captain Oliver Petty who passed to Alex Jones. He fed wing Sam Mines who ran in field and put prop Lloyd Griffiths clear to run the ball in from 20 metres. Mathew Harris converted.

Their second try came from a lineout outside the Morriston 22. The pack drove their opponents deep into their 22 before hooker Ashley Poole detached and gave the ball to scrum half Lee Arthur who drew the defence before putting winger Sam Mines over in the corner. Mathew Harris converted.
