Maesteg Celtic 5 v 27 Ystalyfera

Maesteg Celtic’s battle against relegation continued when they took on league leaders Ystalyfera at Garth Park. Celtic once again made five changes to last Saturdays winning team. Thirty Seven players have now represented Maesteg Celtic in the last Four games.

The first half was evenly contested with both teams competing fiercely. The Celtic defence coped well with the visitors fast three quarters but fifteen minutes into the game their outside half side stepped through for a try under the posts. Celtic competed well with the three quarter line of Shaun Raymond, Kristian Jenkins, Neil Arthur and Aaron Williams containing their opposite numbers.

It was the forwards who brought them back into the game. Outside half Matthew Harris kicked a penalty into the visitors 22 and hooker Ashley Poole found jumper   Alex Jones who was driven forward. The defence illegally disrupted the drive and Harris kicked the penalty to the corner. Mark Hillier–Rees caught the throw in and was driven forward. Winger Shaun Raymond joined the maul and broke free to dive over in the corner. Ystalyfera increased their lead with a penalty just before half time.

The second half was equally contested until the visitors prop crashed over after repeated attempts by their pack. The Ystalyfera outside half increased the lead with a drop goal. Celtic responded with vigour and pounded the visitor’s line for quite some time but the visitors pack was very street wise and showed great determination to keep them out. Late in the game Ystalyfera scored again to make the game safe. Jonathan Davies was voted Celtic Man of the Match for the Fourth time this season.
