Taibach 12 v 34 Maesteg Celtic

Maesteg Celtic travelled to play Taibach, missing four key players, only to find that their opponents were also short due to a bachelor party in Prague. The game began with passive scrums with Taibach playing down the slope. They kicked off deep into the Celtic 22 and immediately put pressure on the Celtic defence. They were awarded a scrum and their scrum half ran to the blind side, drew the defence and put his right wing over in the corner. Ten minutes later they once again kicked deep into the Celtic 22 and won a turn over. An excellent flat long pass put the wing clear once more and he ran in unopposed. The try was converted.

Celtic settled down and carried the ball at their opponents. Repeated drives by the forwards took the ball to the Taibach line and scrum half Leon Evans touched down. The Taibach half backs kicked at every opportunity and kept Celtic in their own half for much of the play. Centre Mathew Harris kicked a penalty into touch in the home 22. Hooker Mathew Phillips found lineout master Alex Jones who was driven at the try line. The drive was stopped and scrum half Evans passed to second row Rhys Bevan Jones on the burst to break the defence and touchdown. Mathew Harris converted.

The second half was a different affair with Celtic in command. Props Ryan Jones and Captain Sean Lambert defended strongly and carried repeatedly. Second rows Alex Jones and Rhys Bevan Jones made their presence felt strongly. The back row of Callum Bowen, Jonathan Davies and Mark Hillier-Rees worked tirelessly in attack and defence to keep the pressure on the home team. The Taibach plan to kick over the rush defence by centres James Jones and Mathew Harris was easily cancelled out by back three Ben Poole, Lloyd Jenkins and Sam Mines.

Mathew Harris put Celtic ahead with a penalty before outside half Luke Richards kicked over the full back from halfway which resulted in Leon Evans tackling him deep in his 22. Man of the Match Rhys Bevan Jones once again followed up at pace and ran over in the corner for his second try. Celtic’s bonus point try came when Mathew Harris intercepted on the ten metre line and ran in unopposed. Harris also converted. The final try came from a melee on half way, from which full back Lloyd Jenkins suddenly appeared with the ball and ran clear to touch down under the posts. Harris converted. Celtics lead at the top of the table is slowly increasing.
