Maesteg Celtic 31 v 12 Pencoed

Maesteg Celtic entertained Pencoed at Garth Park last Saturday. Celtic were determined to make up for the away defeat earlier in the season. Celtic pack took control from the start. Captain Oliver Petty, returning from injury, was on great form. An early break from him resulted in a ruck in the Pencoed 22 from which scrum half Morgan Lloyd fed prop Sean Lambert ably supported by Daniel Miller and they drove into the Pencoed defence forcing them to kill the ball. Outside half Mathew Harris kicked the conversion.

Forward pressure resulted in another penalty which Harris kicked to the corner. Hooker Ashley Poole found second row Alex Jones as usual and the pack drove to the line. The ball was slipped to Oliver Petty who touched down. Mathew Harris converted.

More forward pressure gave Harris another opportunity to kick to the corner. Once again Ashley Poole found Alex Jones and the pack drove over the try line. Second row Mathew Jones touched down. Mathew Harris converted. Pencoed refused to give up and from a penalty in the Celtic 22 their scrum half took a quick tap and scored near the posts. Their outside half converted.

The second half was well contested with both teams attacking at every opportunity. Celtic flank forwards Mark Hillier Rees and Garin Bowen worked tirelessly in the loose. A break by the pack allowed Oliver Petty to pass to Kristian Jenkins who made ground before passing to wing Rhys Fisher. Fisher was brought down and Pencoed killed the ball. Harris kicked the penalty.

Celtic were putting pressure on the Pencoed line when they lost the possession. Pencoed ran the length of the field and their centre scored a great try. Continued pressure from the Celtic pack resulted in two more penalties which were kicked by Mathew Harris.

With minutes left on the clock, Pencoed took play to the Celtic line but unfortunately turned the ball over. Scrum half Lloyd Paget passed to full back Kristian Jenkins who was under his own posts. Kristian ran out of the 22 before passing to centre Lee Arthur who took the ball on before linking with Mathew Harris. Harris gave the ball to flying wing Lloyd who was brought down near the posts. The pack arrived in force and second row Alex Jones ended the match with an excellent try.
